For many students, summer is an exciting time. You've secured your student house, collected your keys, and can start looking forward to the next academic year.
However, if you're like most students, you probably won't be moving into your student accommodation full-time until September. Whether you're spending the summer at home, working, travelling or enjoying a well-earned break, there are a few important things to do before leaving your new home empty for several weeks.
At Orange Student Properties, we help students across Nottingham, Sheffield, Manchester and Stafford enjoy a smooth move into their student homes. Here's our top summer checklist.
1. Make Sure Your Student House Is Secure
Before you leave, check that:
All windows are closed and locked.
External doors are locked securely.
Any valuables have been taken home with you.
Curtains or blinds are left in a sensible position.
Burglar alarms are set
An empty student property can be more vulnerable during the summer, so taking a few minutes to secure the house is well worth it.
2. Keep Your Keys Somewhere Safe
It might seem obvious, but every September there are students who can't remember where they put the keys they collected during the summer!
Store them somewhere memorable and avoid leaving them in the property.
3. Organise Your Utility Accounts
If your tenancy isn't already all-inclusive, summer is the perfect time to arrange your gas, electricity, water and broadband. Getting everything organised before September means you'll have one less thing to think about during Freshers' Week.
There's still time to switch to an all-inclusive bills package. At Orange Student Properties, we offer a competitively priced package that includes gas, electricity, water, broadband and your TV licence. Choosing an all-inclusive package means you won't need to set up multiple accounts or worry about splitting bills with your housemates, making for a simpler, hassle-free tenancy.
If you're unsure what needs setting up or would like to find out more about our all-inclusive bills package, we're always happy to help.
4. Check Your Inventory
At Orange Student Properties you will receive an inventory, take a few minutes to read through it carefully.
If you notice anything that's missing or spot any maintenance issues while visiting your student house, let us know as soon as possible. Summer is the ideal time for us to carry out repairs before everyone moves in.
5. Report Maintenance Early
Spotted a dripping tap? Broken blind? Loose cupboard door?
Please tell us rather than waiting until September. Carrying out maintenance during the quieter summer period helps ensure your student accommodation is ready for the new academic year.
6. Plan Ahead With Your Housemates
Now is the perfect time to decide who is bringing shared items such as:
Kitchen equipment
Cleaning supplies
Air fryer or microwave
Vacuum cleaner
A little planning now can save money and avoid unnecessary duplicates.
7. Protect Your Student Accommodation
If your house will be empty for several weeks:
Avoid advertising on social media that the property is vacant.
Don't arrange parcel deliveries until someone has moved in.
Keep all doors and windows locked whenever you leave.
8. We're Here to Help
Whether you're renting your first student house or you've lived in student accommodation before, moving can feel overwhelming.
